Moving from Puerto Rico to Fort Bliss with her active-duty military spouse one year ago, Vanessa Orengo Rodriguez saw an opportunity to better herself.
Already having her secondary education teaching certification, Rodriguez sought out the El Paso Community College to help gain better computer skills. The staff at the EPCC Center for Corporate and Workforce saw that she was a perfect fit for their Microsoft Certification Program.
Offered by EPCC and funded through a grant by the Prudential Foundation, this training offers active-duty service members, veterans and their dependents free training to gain certification in Microsoft Word and Excel. The program, now in its third year, allows this military population to not only gain this certification, but offers transferable skills in customer service, job seeking and project management.
“We help people find and keep jobs,” said Luz Taboada, director, EPCC Center for Workforce and Corporate Training. When completed with the certification, a paid two-week externship completes the program.
Orengo Rodriguez has completed her certification with the highest grades in the class and is employed for her externship at the Foundation for EPCC office.
“The Microsoft Certification Training program improved me as a human being and a professional,” Orengo Rodriguez said. “I have let other friends at Fort Bliss from Puerto Rico know of this great opportunity.”
She is hoping the externship will lead to a teaching position at the college in the near future.
The Prudential Foundation was founded on the belief financial security should be within the reach for everyone. EPCC fosters partnerships with business and the community to align with workforce demands. With the success of this program it is evident the program with the Prudential Foundation will continue.
The next Microsoft certification class is scheduled to begin Feb. 26. If you qualify for this free training (active-duty, veteran or dependent) contact the EPCC Center for Corporate and Workforce Training at 831-7824. Participants may also be eligible to receive free child care and transportation.
