Remembering Armando: Car lovers gather to honor one of their own
By Capt. Danielle Montgomery, JTF North Public Affairs:
As a staple in the El Paso car community, Armando Carrasco would have been proud of this year’s turnout at the Mission Chevrolet 11th Annual Car Show held here Saturday.
“We have 157 cars registered this year,” said Dolores Avalos, treasurer for the El Paso Corvette Club. “That is almost 60 more than last year.”
Carrasco was not only a founding member of the EPCC, but he served as president on and off for more than 20 years.
After his unexpected passing two months ago, the EPCC decided to dedicate this year’s car show to his honor. In addition, they also created the “Armando Carrasco Best in Show Memorial Award.”
Carrasco also served as the public affairs officer at Joint Task Force North for the past 16 years.
Being the first recipient of the award was a great honor, said George DeWitt, chief of the Logistics, Plans and Operations Division for JTF North. He and Carrasco were co-workers for 13 years. DeWitt’s 1968 Camaro RS/SS was the car that earned him the award.
“This award means a lot to me,” said DeWitt. “Armando and I go way back.”
The SVT Mustang Elite Car Club was also in attendance and presented Leticia Carrasco, Carrasco’s widow, with a plaque from the club.
“Armando was there from the beginning, when it was just me and Roy (Wood) as the only two members of SVT Mustang Elite,” said Eddie Saenz, president and one of two founders of SVT Mustang Elite. “He was always encouraging us to keep going and not give up on the club. Three years later we have 75 members and we owe Armando a lot.”
The EPCC currently has more than 100 members and 54 Corvettes, said Louis Avalos, president of the El Paso Corvette Club.
For Avalos, being president was not something he ever thought about until Carrasco mentioned it to him one day.
“I have been president for two years now and a member for five,” said Avalos. “I could not have done it had it not been for Armando’s support and guidance. I did not think today would happen after his passing, but even in his absence he is still supporting and guiding us.”
