McGregor dining facility named for military hero

A small ceremony was held June 4 to dedicate the McGregor Range dining facility in honor of Maj. Chester Garrett, a Soldier who served in the infantry and Special Forces.

Members of the Special Forces Association Isaac Camacho Chapter IX assisted in the dedication of the dining facility, located at Bldg. 9436 on the McGregor Range Complex.

Garrett, born July 19, 1941, in the Virgin Islands and raised in Puerto Rico, was a Boy Scout who earned many badges, including the Eagle Scout medal. A distinguished military hero, he enlisted in the Army in April 1960, was commissioned in March 1963 and served in a variety of positions until his death on Jan. 3, 1977.

His assignments included: personnel officer and executive officer with Company A, 8th Special Forces Group Airborne, Fort Gulick, Canal Zone; commander of Special Forces Operational Detachment Alpha 341, Co. A, 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Vietnam; commander of Co. C, 9th Battalion, 2nd Brigade, U.S. Army Training Center, Fort Bragg, North Carolina; assistant executive officer with Headquarters, 9th Bn., 2nd Bde., U.S. Army Training Center, Fort Bragg; intelligence officer, 2nd Bde., 4th Infantry Division, Vietnam; operations officer, 1st Bn., 12th Inf., 4th Inf. Div., Vietnam; operations officer, 2nd Bn., 5th Inf., 4th Inf. Div., Vietnam; operations officer, 2nd Bn., 502 Inf., 101st Airborne Div., Vietnam; executive officer, 1st Bn., 501st Inf., 101st Airborne Div., Vietnam; operations officer, 3rd Bn., 187th Inf., 101st Airborne Div., Vietnam; executive officer, G3, U.S. John F. Kennedy Center for Military Assistance, Fort Bragg; senior adviser, Airborne Bn., Combat Arms Training, Army Advance Group, U.S. Military Assistance Command, Vietnam; field team chief and operations chief, Joint Casualty Resolution Center, U.S. Army Pacific Command Thailand; senior instructor, Battery C, Staff and Faculty Bn., School Bde., U.S. Army Air Defense School; and battalion executive officer, Headquarters Student Bn., U.S. Army Air Defense School, Fort Bliss, Texas.

Garrett earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Omaha, Nebraska, in 1969. His military education included Officer Candidate School, Infantry Officer Basic and Advance Courses, Airborne School, Special Forces Qualification Course, Jumpmaster School and Range School.

His awards and decorations include the Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross, Soldiers Medal, Bronze Star with four oak leaf clusters and V Device, Purple Heart with two oak leaf clusters, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal 7th Award, Army Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters and V Device, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Valorous Unit Citation, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Gold Star, Republic of Vietnam Civil Actions Unit Citation, German Army Military Efficiency Award in Silver, Republic of Vietnam Parachute Badge Master Level, Combat Infantryman Badge, Expert Infantryman Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, Special Forces Tab, and Ranger Tab.
