FRG members find the ‘range’ at McGregor
By 1st Lt. Joseph R. Van Valkenburg, Btry. C, 2nd Bn., 43rd ADA:
MCGREGOR RANGE, N.M. – The Family Readiness Group of Battery C, 2nd Battalion, “Warrior” Battalion, 43rd Air Defense Artillery Regiment, 11th ADA, “Imperial” Brigade, in coordination with the battalion and brigade command teams invited family and friends to their field site at McGregor Range, New Mexico, to observe the firing of Patriot PAC II missiles, July 19, during the Warrior Battalion’s Mission Rehearsal Exercise.
The MRE prepared and validated the unit for their upcoming deployment to Southwest Asia in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and took place from July 14 to 24 at McGregor Range.
It is not frequent that air defenders have the opportunity to fire a Patriot missile. It is also not often that their families and friends get the chance to watch an air defense artillery live-fire.
The unit held a barbecue at the unit’s field training site where the FRG was given a brief overview of how the Patriot site is normally set up. Soldiers explained to their families what equipment they would be working with during the deployment.
Brig. Gen. Donald Fryc, commander of the 32nd Army Air and Missile Defense Command, as well as Command Sgt. Maj. Darrin Jefferies, 32nd AAMDC command sergeant major, were in attendance and addressed the Soldiers and their families. They also provided them with advice on how to succeed as a leader and as a family during deployments.
The FRG visit to the field concluded with the lateral promotion of Spc. Quiton Grimes, team leader of a launcher hot crew, Battery C, 2nd Bn., 43rd ADA, to the rank of corporal for his hard work, eagerness to learn and growth as a leader.
