Sgt. Patrick Doran, 3rd BCT, 1st AD Public Affairs:

Capt. Joshua Leone, the commander of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, a wounded combat veteran attended President Barack Obama’s State of the Union Address in Washington, D.C., Feb. 12.

Leone, wounded by an improvised explosive device that struck his vehicle during a deployment to Afghanistan in October 2011, was the guest of U.S. Rep. Pete Gallego, D-Texas, who represents the 23rd Congressional District.

“Even after sustaining major injuries, Captain Leone continues to serve this country,” said Gallego. “His leadership and dedication is a testament to his courage and is in accordance with the highest tradition of the United States Army.”

“This is my first State of the Union address as a member of Congress, and I can think of no better way to underscore the importance of our country’s commitment to its Soldiers.”

Gallego also said it was important for him as the son of a World War II veteran to bring a Soldier to hear the president’s address.

For Leone this is not the first time he has been in close proximity of President Obama. Last year when the president visited Fort Bliss, Leone was one of the Soldiers selected to sit in a round table discussion about wounded warrior care.

“My wife and I sat in the balcony next to guests of Congressman Beto O’Rourke of Texas and had great view of the entire event,” said Leone.

Leone also said he was honored to be invited and that it was fitting that he and other wounded warriors were invited to bear witness of such an important event for our nation.
